Assunta School raises RM1.4m for new block

NEW STRAITS TIMES, Wednesday, September 12, 2001

THE dream of getting a new building will soon be a reality for Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Assunta in Petaling Jaya as it has managed to raise enough funds for a new block.

The school’s new principal, Lim Sew Kwe, took the first step in realising the dream by appealing to parents for support.

The proposal was endorsed in April last year during the school’s annual Parent-Teacher’s Association meeting.

The association managed to collect RM1.4 million through a jogathon, carnival and donations from well-wishers.

“The response was tremendous. We are so grateful to all who have made this possible,” said Lim at the foundation-laying ceremony recently.

Present were Assunta primary and secondary school founder Sister Enda Ryan, contributors and ex-students.

Yeoh Tiong Lay & Sons Holdings Sdn Bhd started the ball rolling by donating RM700.000, followed by IMC Pan Asia Alliance Pte Ltd with RM205,200.

The four-storey building will’house a canteen for its 2,300 students as well as living skills workshops, library, resource centre, audio-visual rooms and computer laboratories.

The block will be named after ex-As-suntarian Puan Sri Kai Yong Yeoh, wife of YTL’s executive chairman Tan Sri Yeoh Tiong Lay. The Yeoh family is the single largest donor to the Assunta School Building Fund. — By Meena Sreenivasan.
